Omega Dubai Desert Classic Tournaments:

The Dubai Desert Classic is a professional golf tournament on the European Tour, first played in 1989. It was founded by the businessman Karl Fowler under the title “Desert Classic Golf Challenge.”

The first three editions of the tournament, all won by Ian Woosnam, were held at the Doha Golf Club in Doha, Qatar. The success of these events saw a new course designed by American golf architect Kyle Phillips specially built for the event on neighbouring land to
host the fourth staging of the competition in 1992.

In its early years, players such as Greg Norman and Seve Ballesteros travelled from around the world to compete – although the latter only made the journey for the 1991 event. It was previously known as The European and Dubai Desert Classic and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

In 1995, a unique two-day stroke play format was introduced to keep leading players in contention for a longer period, but in 1996 a return to a more traditional format brought immediate success as Mark O’Meara won by one shot from Jesper Parnevik and Colin Montgomerie. The prize fund of £1 million has been one of the smallest on the European Tour since 2002 when it reached its peak of £2 million. In recent years, however, it has matched or exceeded that figure. In 2007 Ebel committed their sponsorship to 2007 and 2008 with an option for 2009; they have now extended this through 2011.

The tournament is often cited as being one of the best-run events on tour. The prize fund dropped to £994,000 in 2007 but since joining the European Tour International Schedule in 2009 it has risen back to around £1 million.
